A wood lot can be an important part of a farm. In fact, a wood lot is an essential important part of a farm. It is the source of firewood, logs to be cut into lumber, seedling to transplant in places you would prefer them, fence posts to name just a few uses.

If you want to clear land, make the animals work for you. Cows fun in woodlots get rid of all the underbrush. Goats will browse back brush. Pigs will root it all up. When, at least, some of the trees are cut out sow grass and legume seed in the rough pasture.
Over the years you can remove stumps and rocks. Eventually, the land may be plowable. (perhaps in 5 years) Don't forget to leave a portion of the woodlot for wildlife. Flora and fauna are important too for pleasure, aesthetics and even as a source of wild foods.
